St Colmcille (7 December 521 – 9 June 597 AD)

One of the three patron Saints of Ireland along with, St Patrick, and Brigid of Kildare. An Irish saint famous for founding the monastery at Iona, and thus spreading Christianity to Scotland. He is the patron saint of Derry. it is said that he was the great great grandson of Niall of the Nine Hostages. The area known today as Glencolmcille was his home for some time. Some scholars believe his original name was Crimthann or a gaelic version of “dove” He reportedly founded the town of Swords in 560 ad. He is honoured in the Anglican tradition, in 1962 Benjamin Britten composed a hymn of St Columba for the choir and organ. As one of our great saints he deserves much study.
